How to Train Your Dog to Stop Jumping All Over You
If you are one of the millions dog owners having problems with your dog jumping up on everyone, you are not alone. Although it's not any comfort to you. Rule number one to train your dog to stop jumping up is to stop giving the dog any attention when he jumps. The most common mistake we make, is to give our dog some sort of attention when he is jumping. And to a dog that's often interpret as a reward. So whenever your dog is jumping, ignore the behavior completely and turn your back against it. A jumping dog can be funny when it is a puppy, but not so cool when it is 100 lbs beats;-)
You need to teach the dog to sit down, because it will shift the dog's focus and is a great way to reward him if he was about to jump and didn't. So the next time your dog jumps up on you use the sit command, and if he sits down give him praise. Reward is very important because a dog will repeat the behavior he is rewarded for. Our job is to make it clear to the dog when he is rewarded and not. When you repeat this a number of times your dog will see that to sit down he gets rewarded, but nothing for jumping. It is all very logical.
Another good tricks to use is when your dog comes against you and you expect him to jump, raise your right arm to your right shoulder and it will shift his focus from jumping and to your arm. The best way for your dog to see your arm is to sit down because of the angel. And then what? Praise him again.
The next thing you need to do is to implement this behavior in to the entire household (babies are the exceptions of cause).
It does happen that some dog still periodically jump every now and then.
