Speak ( dog bark ), yes, Speak, speak (, dog bark), Yes, good girl, Now you're either thinking to yourself that trick is charming or that trick is annoying. Now, I'm here today to tell you that you can have it both ways. This is Hippy Shake. I'm Kayl Welcome to McCann Dogs,
You may be surprised to know that one of the best ways to get rid of unwanted behavior is to turn it into a trick and put it on command, So I've taught Hippy Shake to bark on command. When I say the word speak Now, since she knows to do that in order, I can also teach her the counterbalance behavior of being quiet.
So I can start the behavior and stop the behavior whenever I choose to do so. Good girl,
This trick can be challenging to teach because you can't precisely lure your dog to bark with a treat, So the best way to teach it is by capturing the behavior when it happens. Now Hippy is a pretty barky dog, so teaching her to speak on command was difficult. The way that I did it is each time she barked. I would capture the behavior by saying yes and then rewarding her. Now some people find it easier to train this while they're playing with their dogs.

Lots of dogs like to play and bark simultaneously, So that can be a perfect opportunity to pair the behavior of barking and getting a reward together.
So again, the easiest way to do this is to pair rewarding your dog for barking while they're playing.
What you can do is start by encouraging your dog to play and seeing, if you can get them fired up enough, that they want to start barking. Each time you hear a bark, say yes and then reward your dog.
Once you're playing and they're starting to bark more consistently, you might be ready to begin to add a command Read your dog's body. Language is often straightforward to tell when your dog is prepared to let out a bark. So what I might do is, as I see her about to bark, I give out a command like bark or speak, and then once she gives up that bark. I can yes and reward from there If you're hoping to work.
In the quiet portion of this exercise as well try saying quietly in between each bark and reward.
Once you have a few moments of silence, you can say quiet, good, soft, and praise your dog before asking them to bark again.
This helps your dog learn the difference between barking and getting a reward and being quiet and praised. Teaching your dog to bark a command can be an amusing and cute trick. But remember, if you have a dog that likes to bark a lot, you may choose to reward the quiet portion of this exercise much more than the barking since barking is pretty self-rewarding behavior for a dog.
